Bitcoin Jungle (Costa Rica)
Overview
Bitcoin Jungle is a grassroots project launched in late 2021 in Costa Rica's Southern Pacific zone (Uvita/Dominical area) to create a circular Bitcoin economy. Using the Bitcoin Jungle app (a custom Lightning wallet), over 600 merchants now accept Bitcoin. Weekly farmer's markets in Uvita see vendors doing up to 25% of sales in BTC via Lightning. From coffee at Café Mono Congo to groceries and tour operators – you can live substantially on Bitcoin. Jack Dorsey has visited multiple times, reportedly interested in this bottom-up experiment. Costa Rica offers 15% capital gains tax, but its territorial system may exempt foreign-sourced gains. The Digital Nomad Visa (2022) allows 1-2 year stays with $3,000/month income. Costa Rica has no army, excellent healthcare (best in LatAm), and the famous "Pura Vida" lifestyle. Drawbacks: Cost of living surprisingly high (imports expensive). Car often needed. 3.5 hours to San José airport. Rainy season floods, insects, and some petty theft (secure your property).
